  • Applicants ineligible for graduation before the fellowship start are excluded.
  • The program targets students in their final undergraduate summer.

Additional Information

Before Accepting an Offer:

Applicants must carefully review the Scholarship Benefits and Conditions document.

This outlines all terms, requirements, and policies scholars must agree to.

  • International candidates may also apply for the Summer Student Fellowship Program. Such applicants can seek assistance from WHOI’s Foreign National Advisor for the essential J-1 Visa documentation. To secure a J-1 Visa, verifiable evidence of English Language Proficiency is mandatory.
  • For those presently enrolled in a U.S. university or institution on an F-1 Visa, consultation with your institution’s F-1 Program Officer or International Officer is necessary. This discussion aims to explore the possibilities of Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT) eligibility.

International students must fulfill a 14% U.S. Federal income tax obligation on their weekly stipend payments, travel payments, and the fair-market worth of provided WHOI housing. The deduction of this tax occurs through payroll deductions from their stipend payments.

For Summer 2024 participation, eligibility hinges on considerations related to Visa status and potential travel restrictions linked to COVID-19.
