The American Association Of University Women (AAUW) assists women who are not citizens or permanent residents of the US with an international fellowship to research or study full-time in the US for a postdoctoral or graduate program. The program is available at all accredited institutions in the US. 

Eligibility

  • Not for previous AAUW fellowship/grant recipients (excluding branch awards)
  • Open to women worldwide pursuing graduate degrees or postdoctoral research
  • Must have a citizenship outside of U.S. and non-U.S. visa if residing in U.S.
  • Degree and English proficiency requirements vary by program
  • Master’s/doctoral applicants must be enrolled full-time at a U.S. accredited institution
  • Postdoctoral applicants must have a Ph.D./D.F.A./M.F.A. and conduct research
  • Support is provided for a full academic year, not partial
  • Distance/online programs are ineligible unless due to COVID-19 precautions
  • AAUW makes all eligibility determinations

This fellowship aims to support international women in graduate-level academic programs or research worldwide. Specific eligibility criteria ensure funding is directed to qualified applicants.

AAUW International Fellowships Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the International Scholarship/Fellowship, candidates must fulfill the following requirements,

  • Candidates must be citizens of a foreign country outside the US.
  • Candidates must have a degree identical to the US bachelor’s degree before the deadline date for application.
  • Candidates must be ready to engage in full-time study throughout the fellowship year.
  • Candidates must also have an intention of pursuing a career after their studies. 
  • Candidates must present valid English proficiency results such as IELTS, TOEFL, etc.
  • Candidates must have submitted their applications before the deadline of 15th November 2023.
  • Postdoctoral candidates must show their doctoral degree on or before 15th November 2023. Candidates must also specify where they would carry out their research study.
  • Candidates applying for a Doctoral and master’s degree must have enrollment in a US-accredited university during the scholarship year.

Candidates for the AAUW International fellowships are chosen for educational accomplishment and exemplified obligation to girls and women.

Criteria for Selection

AAUW International Fellowship Selection Process

  • Applications reviewed annually by a selection panel
  • Awards determined based on published eligibility criteria and funds available
  • Panel recommendations subject to final approval by AAUW
  • Process is confidential; no application evaluations or reconsiderations provided
  • Applications become property of AAUW and are not returned

Special consideration given to those:

  • Residing in home country at application
  • From developing/emerging countries
  • From underrepresented groups in any region

Selection criteria include:

  • Intent to return home
  • Academic qualifications
  • Commitment to advancing women/girls in home country
  • Feasibility of proposed plan of study/research
  • Prior community/civic service in home country
  • Home country’s need for skills/knowledge
  • Financial need
  • Motivation for graduate study/research

Proposal: Proposed research/study plan.

Recommendations (2): From professors/colleagues well acquainted with academic work.

Documents:

  • Proof of highest degree
  • Proof of current enrollment (if applicable)
  • Proof of doctoral/MFA degree (postdoctoral only)
  • Proof of English proficiency through exam scores, statement, or education history

Review and submit completed application by deadline.

Deadline/Timeline

  • Deadline: November 15, 2023 at 11:59 pm PST :Application, recommendations, and all supporting documents due
  • April 15, 2024 : Fellowship decisions notified via email
  • July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025 :Fellowship award time
  • Weekend/holiday deadline extensions: If a deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, it will be moved to the next business day.
  • No early decision notifications available: AAUW cannot grant requests for earlier notification of results.
