Scholarship Benefits
The scholarship will have a value ranging from $2,500 to $15,000 and a duration of 1 to 3 years, as outlined below:
For undergraduate students, the scholarship amounts will be as follows:
- a) For a one-year tenure: Between $2,500 and $8,000, which will be applied to tuition fees in the first year.
- b) For a two-year tenure: Between $2,500 and $12,000, with a maximum of $8,000 allocated in the first year of study and a maximum of $4,000 allocated in the second year of study.
- c) For a three-year tenure: Between $2,500 and $15,000, with a maximum of $8,000 allocated in the first year of study, a maximum of $4,000 allocated in the second year, and a maximum of $3,000 allocated in the third year of study.
Postgraduate students will receive between $2,500 and $15,000, which will be applied to one or more years of their postgraduate study.
- The scholarship funds will be directly applied to the recipient’s tuition fees for the approved program of study. This application will occur either at the time of enrollment or once the enrollment process has been completed.
Eligibility
To qualify for consideration, applicants must fulfill the following requirements:
- Intend to enroll on a full-time basis in either an undergraduate or postgraduate program as a new international student at the University of Waikato.
- Have received an offer of admission from the University of Waikato, which may include a pathway offer for a degree combined with the Certificate of Attainment in English Language, the Certificate of Attainment in Foundation Studies, Certificate of University Preparation, International Diploma (Business), International Diploma (Computer Science), or Diploma of Postgraduate Preparation (Pre-Masters).
- Maintain a minimum equivalent GPA of B+ in the qualification used for admission to the University of Waikato.
- Currently not be registered in any undergraduate or postgraduate program at the University of Waikato, nor have made any fee payments at the time of application.
- Not be sponsored by any external organization when transitioning to the University of Waikato.
- Not be arriving at the University of Waikato through a Guaranteed Credit Arrangement or participating in a study abroad or student exchange agreement.
How to apply
Applicants are welcome to submit their applications at any time, and typically, decisions will be made within a timeframe of 8 to 12 weeks from the submission date. However, please note that applications received within 4 weeks prior to the commencement of any of the university’s primary trimesters (A, B, and C Trimesters) may not be considered.
As part of the online application process, applicants are required to complete the following steps

Upload their offer of admission, whether it is conditional or unconditional, from the University of Waikato.
Step 2:
When completing the online application, provide specific details explaining their motivation for studying at the University of Waikato and outlining how they intend to represent the university as a global ambassador.

The Vice-Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarship, previously known as the University of Waikato International Excellence Scholarship until 2023, was created in 2015 with the aim of promoting educational opportunities, encouraging internationalization, and providing assistance to exceptional international applicants who are enrolling as new students in undergraduate or postgraduate programs at the University of Waikato.
These scholarships are awarded as tuition fee credits in New Zealand Dollars (NZD) and can have a maximum value of $15,000 for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
