Scholarship Benefits
A one-year scholarship can usually be extended two times for a maximum of 3 years. The monthly payment for the scholarship is €934, totaling €11,208 annually. Students who have at least one child receive €1,094 per month, which totals €13,128 per year.
Eligibility
Here are the requirements to be eligible for this scholarship:
- Citizenship from one of these countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Czechia, Hungary, Serbia, or Ukraine
- Permanent residence in your home country when applying for the scholarship
- Not older than 30 years (for Master’s students) or 35 years (for PhD students) by October 1, 2025, when the first scholarship is awarded (exceptions can be justified, see FAQ/question 11)
- No available financing for the study or research stay at a Bavarian university through personal or third-party funds (e.g., another scholarship)
- German and/or English language proficiency appropriate for the study or research project in Bavaria (typically C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
- Outstanding academic performance at your home university when applying for the scholarship
- Enrollment at the chosen Bavarian university during the scholarship period (not necessary at the time of application)
Required Documents
All required documents must be submitted online via the BAYHOST / BTHA StipSys form by December 1, 2024, at the latest. Late submissions or those sent by e-mail or post will not be accepted. This also applies to incomplete applications or those not following the required format.
- Complete the StipSys online formhttps://stipsys.uni-passau.de/public/application.xhtml?pID=728, including the following documents in PDF format (each file should be a maximum of 5 MB):
- A letter of motivation in German or English (1–2 pages)
- Proof of your German and/or English proficiency (refer to FAQ)
- University degree certificate with a transcript of records, along with a certified German or English translation (Czech applicants can submit documents in Czech, English, or German without translation). If you do not have your degree certificate due to pending graduation: submit a transcript of records and a confirmation from your home university stating the expected graduation date by July 31, 2025, at the latest.
- Proof of citizenship (scan of passport or ID card)
- A letter of endorsement (“Betreuungszusage”) from a professor or the coordination office of a Master’s program at a Bavarian higher education institution – highly recommended for Master’s applications, mandatory for PhDs or one-year research stays (refer to FAQ and “Guidelines for the letter of endorsement”)
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form in German or English
- Optional: Documents related to voluntary work, internships, additional training, publications, etc. (no translation required; maximum 10 documents)
- Additional requirement for PhDs in Bavaria: a two-page project description and a timetable for the entire project
- Additional requirement for one-year research stays in Bavaria as part of a PhD in the home country: a two-page project description and timetable for the entire project, along with a letter of recommendation from the PhD supervisor in the home country
- If applying for an age limit exception: an informal letter with appropriate justification (refer to FAQ)
- If applying for a family allowance: a birth certificate of the child with a certified German or English translation; for Czech applicants, no translation is needed.
