Scholarship Benefits
The maximum monthly funding amount is €930. Depending on available funds, some doctoral researchers may receive a merit scholarship of €1,200 per month (approximately 2–3 merit scholarships are awarded per round).
Merit scholarships are granted for 2 semesters (a total of 12 months). You can apply again for a scholarship. In exceptional cases with strong justification, the maximum funding period is 3 years.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this scholarship, you:
- must have been enrolled in your subject at Universität Hamburg for at least 2 semesters and be pursuing a degree (students in 2-year master’s programs and doctoral researchers can apply after completing 1 semester).
- must not hold German citizenship and;
- must be ineligible for the federal student loan scheme.
How to apply

Next, you will be asked to register and finish your application. Use your student email address when registering, not your personal email, on the online application form.
Then, you will need to upload the following documents to the online application portal:
- Your CV
- A motivation letter using this form (PDF)
- Proof of any social or intercultural activities (if you have them)
- For your academic record:
- Bachelor’s and state exam students should submit your STiNE “Leistungskonto” printout or a current transcript
- Master’s and doctoral students should submit your most recent degree certificate with grades, in English or German
- Evaluations from 2 full-time PhD-holding faculty members at the University of Hamburg.
You will need to provide proof of your residence permit to the program coordinator before the application deadline. If you’re an EU citizen, submit your ID card and your German registration certificate (“Meldebescheinigung”). Email the program coordinator to set up a time to submit these. Your documents won’t be kept on file.
