Scholarship Benefits

A one-time payment of up to $40,000 is available for studies at a different institution approved by the University of Melbourne. Runner-up candidates will receive $10,000, and those in third place will be awarded $5,000.

Eligibility

To be eligible for admission, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be accepted into a course of study at an institution approved by the Academic Board, based on the recommendation of the head of the School of Music.
  • Be under the supervision of a teacher approved by the Academic Board, as recommended by the head of the School of Music.
  • Must have graduated or are still studying in the University.
  • Additionally, you must be a violinist between the ages of 17 and 25 as of February 2, 2025, and have been a resident of Australia for at least two years by that date.
  • Both domestic and international students are eligible.

How to apply

  • Applications for round 1 must be submitted online through the link below (available only during the application period) and should include:
  • A high-quality online recording of the specified repertoire, along with contact details for your teacher or employer to verify the recording.
  • A summary of your experience as a musician, including locations and periods of professional work.
  • Relevant educational qualifications.
  • Details of the proposed training or study program you plan to undertake.
  • Contact information for two referees.
  • Recordings will be evaluated by distinguished Australian violinists based on musicality, tone, technique, intonation, and poise. Six candidates will be chosen to advance to round 2, and three finalists will proceed from round 2 to round 3.

Additional Information

The Dorcas McClean Scholarship, valued at up to $40,000, is available to candidates seeking admission to an approved institution. Applicants must be aged between 17 and 25 and must have been residents of Australia for at least two years prior to the competition date. Assessment is conducted through a competition for shortlisted candidates, held over several days at the Southbank Campus. This triennial competition will next be held in early 2025.
