Magoosh Course Materials Overview
Quality of Magoosh GRE Study Materials:
Magoosh offers affordable, high-quality study resources. While their offerings may not be as extensive as competitors’, they can still be sufficient for thorough GRE preparation for most students. Instead of a traditional core curriculum with sequential lessons, Magoosh presents a library-style format, covering all essential GRE topics through individual video lessons. These lessons, accompanied by practice problems, are organized by topics. Recommended order of lessons is provided, but not as structured as other test prep courses.
Video Lessons
The videos feature a digital whiteboard with voiceover explanations, focusing on content over style. The instructors are knowledgeable and adept at breaking down complex topics into easily digestible parts. A transcript accompanies each video lesson, highlighting the instructor’s words and providing a useful reference.
After each video lesson, a short practice set helps reinforce the material. The practice problems are well-designed and follow a consistent pattern. Magoosh also offers an impressive customizable practice problem feature, enabling students to create tailored sets based on problem type, difficulty, and other criteria.
-
- Average production value, but excellent content.
- Digital whiteboard with voiceover and notes.
- Instructors are knowledgeable and present material effectively.
- Full transcripts and note-taking features available.
Practice Problems
Magoosh has around 1,600 practice problems available. The quality and presentation of the problems are top-notch. Each problem includes a video explanation, text explanation, suggested lessons, and the note-taking function. Magoosh’s review feature allows students to track their performance and progress, offering insights into areas that need improvement. It can be filtered by various factors and even provides access to previously answered questions for further review.
Students can filter questions by type and by difficulty so they can focus on precisely what they need and use their time wisely. There are video and text-based explanations following every single question so students can learn from their mistakes and discover strategies for similar questions. Magoosh system also utilizes an adaptive technology to recognize a student’s strengths and weaknesses to adapt the practice questions accordingly. This technology is very similar to that used on the official GRE.
As students complete their practice tests, Magoosh tracks their performance and pace to give feedback. This feedback is visible on the central dashboard and compares a student’s progress and pace to that of other test-takers. This valuable information can help students adjust their study plans to focus on areas where they might need some extra practice to keep up with their goals.
- One of the most popular GRE programs.
- Free trial available. 6 months subscription.
- 1400+ Practice Questions. 3 Practice Exams.
- Available online on-demand. No in-person classes.
- Offers a mobile app that makes it easy to study on the go.
- 5 Points improvement guarantee.
- $169-$499
- Excellent customer support.
In summary, while Magoosh’s course structure and video lesson production quality may not be on par with other test prep companies, the overall package is impressive considering its affordability. The lessons are informative, the customizable practice sessions are valuable, and the problem explanations are comprehensive. Magoosh’s GRE study materials provide a solid option for comprehensive and cost-effective GRE preparation.
Magoosh Practice Test Features
Magoosh offers 3 full-length practice tests, which is less than competitors like Princeton Review, which provides 8. While it would be beneficial for Magoosh to offer more tests, this is a tradeoff for a value-oriented course. For many students, 3 tests may suffice, and additional free GRE practice tests are available online if needed.
Magoosh GRE Practice Tests interface is very similar to real GRE to help students become accustomed to the GRE test format and adapt to the test’s time constraints. The adaptive algorithm ensures that students experience a realistic simulation of the GRE exam, which can boost their confidence and readiness.
- Adaptive Algorithm: Magoosh uses an adaptive algorithm to present test-takers with questions tailored to their performance level, closely emulating the actual GRE testing experience.
- Extensive Question Bank: The platform offers a large number of practice questions, providing ample opportunities for students to familiarize themselves with GRE question types and formats.
Magoosh Live Class Option
In addition to self-study options, Magoosh also offers Live Classes for students who need extra accountability and individualized attention. GRE Live Classes are taught by expert instructors and cover essential topics like statistics and data interpretation, paragraph argument, geometry, and more. Live Class plans come with supplemental homework assignments to reinforce learning plus everything that’s included in the self-study plans — including their 5 point score increase and 7-day money back guarantees
Magoosh does not promote live class option on their pricing page now. Magoosh has replaced live classes with admissions support services, such as graduate application videos, workshops, personal statement examples, resume templates, and more.
For those who require a live online course for structured learning and accountability, it may be more suitable to consider traditional prep classes from our list of top GRE prep courses, such as Princeton Review or Kaplan.
Magoosh Study Tools
Magoosh offers a comprehensive suite of study tools to help GRE aspirants optimize their preparation process.
Study plans: Customizable study plans and schedules catering to various timeframes ranging from one week to six months. These plans provide a structured approach to studying, ensuring that test-takers cover all essential topics within their desired preparation period.
Vocabulary tool/Flash Card: Magoosh offers a vocabulary builder app designed to expand students’ GRE-specific vocabulary.
To further support vocabulary development, Magoosh provides vocabulary flashcards that enable students to practice and retain new words effectively. Alongside these, math flashcards are also available, helping test-takers strengthen their quantitative skills and tackle GRE math questions with confidence. Overall, Magoosh’s collection of study tools equips students with the necessary resources to excel in all aspects of the GRE.
What We Like About Magoosh
- Access to official questions from past year exams:The number one thing I like about Magoosh is that they now provide access to official GRE questions from previous years’ exams. This is a huge benefit and rare among GRE prep companies. Practicing with real GRE problems under actual test conditions is the best way to prepare. I give Magoosh a lot of credit for adding this great new feature.
- Affordability: Magoosh offers competitive pricing compared to other GRE prep courses, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious students. They also offer a lot of free resources and you can also find discounts and sales to further reduce the cost.
- Detailed Explanation:I really like that Magoosh gives both text and video explanations for all practice problems. This is ideal for visual learners. Written explanations alone can be dull and may not adequately break down problems, particularly difficult math questions. Magoosh’s video explanations thoroughly analyze each problem in an understandable way. They help the lessons really stick with you.
- Flexible and convenient: The online platform and mobile app allow you to study anytime, anywhere, and at your own pace.
- User-friendly platform: Magoosh’s platform is easy to navigate, with progress tracking features to help you stay organized and focused.
- High-quality video lessons: The video lessons are clear, concise, and engaging, covering a wide range of GRE topics and test-taking strategies.
- Customizable study schedules: Magoosh provides study schedules that can be tailored to your needs, whether you have a few weeks or several months to prepare.
- 5-point increase guarantee– If you are going to spend the time and money on a prep course, you want to know that it is worth it. The 5-point increase guarantee can give you confidence while you study.
- Free study schedules- Schedules keep students focused and motivated. Free study schedules come in a daily or weekly format depending on your preference. This is a great resource especially if you struggle with time management or organization.
- Practice tests and questions adapt to your strengths and weaknesses– It is great to be able to customize your practice sessions to what you most need. You can choose how many and what type of questions you want to practice and you can also alternate between practice mode (which provides explanations) or quiz mode (for more realistic practice).
- Tutoring Options available– If you need some one-on-one help, Magoosh offers 4 tutoring packages for an additional cost. These packages cover different areas of the test and give you varying amounts of time in your tutoring session depending on the kind of help you are looking for.
- Free Flash Cards- If you find flash card study effective for your learning style, they provide the cards.
What We Did Not Like
- Limited live support: Although Magoosh offers email assistance from expert tutors, they do not provide live chat or one-on-one tutoring options.
- Fewer practice exams: Magoosh includes 3 full-length practice exams, which is fewer than some competitors.
- 100% virtual- For people who need personal interaction or an in-class experience for best results, this course may not be for you.
- The production quality of the Magoosh’s video lessons are bit lacking when compared with Kaplan or Princeton/Mahattan GRE.
- Access is limited to either 1 or 6 months- This may be sufficient time for some students, but you may struggle to get sufficient practice and review in before taking your test.
Is Magoosh GRE Prep Worth It?
Magoosh is a great GRE prep resource. But that doesn’t mean it is a good option for everyone. If you are anxious about your score, it might be better to choose a program, like Magoosh, that offers a money-back guarantee if you do not increase your score by a certain number of points.
When it comes to budget, Magoosh is affordable compared to other prep courses. Magoosh also offers a 7-day money-back guarantee if you do not like the course for any reason or feel it may not work for you.
If you need face-to-face support, you may want to choose another prep course. However, Magoosh is an excellent option for practice questions completed on a laptop. Email support from Magoosh Test Prep Experts is also available if you need help.
Overall, most students will find Magoosh a useful study tool. It offers the materials and motivation necessary to keep students on track leading up to the GRE. If you are still unsure, it won’t hurt to take advantage of the week-long free trial and see if Magoosh is the right fit for your GRE prep goals.

Additional Information about the GRE
What is the GRE?
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test, much like the SAT or ACT, but is specifically designed to predict your future performance in graduate or business schools. If you are interested in pursuing a master’s, MBA, or doctoral degree, you will need to score high on the GRE.
Your final GRE score will be taken into account along with your previous work experience, undergraduate record, and other relevant materials. A poor score can, therefore, negatively affect your graduate school applications.
What is the GRE format?
The GRE is a multiple-choice style standardized test typically taken online, but traditional tests are also offered just not as frequently. All the questions reflect the kind of material you should be prepared for in graduate school courses.
The questions are separated into 3 individually timed sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. The analytical and reasoning skills tested in the GRE are vital for your success in graduate or business school. Unlike other standardized tests, you can skip questions within a particular section and come back to them later. You also have the option to choose which questions you would like to answer first within a section.
Each section has its own grading system:
- Analytical Writing: a scale of 0 – 6
- Verbal Reasoning: a scale of 130 – 170
- Quantitative Reasoning: a scale of 130 – 170
How to Choose the Right GRE Test Prep
Since the GRE is such an important test in your life, it is important to be well prepared and take advantage of the best GRE prep course for you.
We’ll leave you with these questions to facilitate the decision-making process:
- What program/school do I want to get into and what is the average GRE score of accepted students?
- What score do I want and how much do I need to improve to get there?
- What is my budget?
- What kind of learner am I?
- Does the company guarantee an improved score?
- Can I get my money back if the course isn’t a good fit for me?
We wish you the best of luck as you begin this process toward a successful graduate school degree.
Magoosh came highly recommended and so I gave it a shot. I got a lot of helpful materials that helped in preparing me for my GRE exams. I was able to experience first hand what to expect and then study for it. The course was easy to follow through on your own without much external help. For whatever area you are particularly interested in, you will be provided with a lot of practice tests, study materials, vocabulary flashcard and just everything you need to be prepared. I was always intimidated and didn’t know how to go about the GRE exam. Going through Magoosh GRE course broke down everything to the point that I was looking forward to writing my GRE exams. Something I couldn’t do prior to discovering the website.
If you have been out of college for more than 16 years, you will come to appreciate this course. I learnt of this course few days to my GRE exams and thought I could give it a try. The easy and engaging way it was written made me finish the book within 4 days. Coming from an art school and not really inclined towards maths, I came to appreciate the course. Magoosh course was quite thorough and I love the vocabulary flashcard app which came in very handy. The only thing I noticed was that some of their sample questions are not really as clear as I would have loved. But I guess they follow GRE pattern because some of their questions on exams day were construed that way too. Also, they could breakdown the maths part a little bit further to help people like me that find maths challenging. I wish I had enough time to really study the course. I’m sure the outcome would have been much impressive than what I got. But there is no doubt that my score was all thanks to Magoosh.
Don’t bother going for the book if you already have an account with their online course. I was surprised to find the same errors I found on their website also contained in the book. Come on, they can surely do better. The only reason I’m not freaking out is that I got a pretty good score on maths and verbal with the help of Magoosh. But they sure should fix those typo errors as they are pretty annoying.
Come on, there is no way I could have scored up to 322 if I hadn’t made use of Magoosh. It’s nothing but a lifesaver. I have no regret whatsoever going for their 90-day study plan.
For me, Magoosh helped me with my GRE comprehension aspect with its great explanations that made reading and understanding easy. I have never been a fan of Maths and so I was amazed at the way they simplified their maths questions that for a moment I didn’t remember I was dealing with Maths. It’s a great option for people like me who like a quick way of preparing for exams without having to go through rigorous reading. In my opinion, Magoosh GRE is for anyone looking for a “dirty” and fast way of preparing for exams. You will find all the resources that will help you pass your exams. Just a month with their course is enough to have you well-prepared. I combined their course with PowerPrep tests and my score was beyond expectations. Their video explanation is very simple as it guides you on the easiest way to answer any question. It was like a walkthrough for most of the questions I got. I really don’t know about other people but there is this thrill I got whenever I was able to get a question right. And this was because the course helped me to develop strategies that I used every time.
No need stressing yourself on how to answer math questions or wasting time trying to figure it out. And on the day of exams, you will be thankful you did. And for someone like me who never really like maths, I was particularly grateful for Magoosh. And surprisingly, if you studied math in college, you will find that these maths subjects make for a good refresher.
The best way to describe how helpful the Magoosh GRE course is to tell you this – I’m running a program at Penn State Master of Statistics and this was because I enrolled for their 6-month study subscription. I guess this tells you something about the course. Make up your mind.
I don’t know if I should leave a comment here since I didn’t use the Magoosh course. I can’t say if it is helpful or not. I just want to let anyone know that they can also pass their GRE exam if they are willing to study on their own. There are a lot of free study packages that you can get for free on the internet. It might take you sometime to gather and arrange, but if you are running within a budget and can afford to put in the work, you can find free materials that will help you. And maybe if I had money to spare, I would prefer a classroom since I will have teachers that I can throw my questions at. Just my opinion, though.
I didn’t bother trying out their course for free for 7 days because I read a lot of good reviews about them. So, I went ahead and subscribed for 6 months. I would not really say the exams were a walk in the park like a lot of people made me believe. But, I’m still thankful because I probably would not have gotten the score I have now which is somehow better than I would have gotten without Magoosh. Maths is still my challenge and my undoing. And there is no way you can escape it in GRE exams. However, Magoosh helped me understand basic concepts that I needed to make quick calculations.
One thing I like about their course is that their question pool is really, really vast. I did not for once lack what to practice with which helped me get better. So, for anyone struggling in maths like I did, I would highly recommend Magoosh. The videos are helpful and can come in handy, but their Verbal was very difficult. And I mean more difficult than ETS PP2. This is just to help prepare your mind on what to expect.
I have tried Magoosh’s 3-month study plan. I can only say it helped me a little. The questions are not that specific and could be on anything. If you are looking for GRE specific types of questions, you might not get that with Magoosh. I felt like I wasted a lot of time looking for such questions and I couldn’t concentrate on others. On the day I took the test, I was faced with a lot of questions that I had no specific answers to because of the random learning nature of Magoosh which doesn’t really give you a specific understanding of how to tackle such. I had a lot of information gotten from Magoosh that I didn’t really need. I actually like the strategy they gave for essay writing. Knowing what I know now, I would have chosen an “in class” program than going for Magoosh.
Magoosh GRE really helped me and I can confidently recommend it to anyone. The best part is that the program makes it possible for you to give it a try before committing your money to purchase it. It has a realistic score predictor for verbal and Math. The interface is easy to use, and I could take as many tests as I wish when practicing. I enjoyed the support they offer their students and had my doubts cleared quickly whenever I sent them a mail. Their student Facebook group also helped me. For anyone considering going for Magoosh GRE and wondering what to expect. Here are some of the things you will get: More than 1000 collections of questions with videos that explain them. Over 200 lessons for Verbal, Math, and AWA all with transcripts. Flash cards and vocab builder for Vocab, Grammar and Math.
I like that they make it possible for you to pause your subscription if you are not using it at the moment and reactivate when you want. But you need to put this in writing and mail to them. I could have easily ignored the program if I didn’t like the course after trying it for 7 days for free. I went ahead and bought the complete course and was satisfied with the result I got. The only thing is that they do not grade essays. If they can put that into consideration, their program would be perfect.
Magoosh is a great way to get some assistance, practice tests, score predictions, schedules and a better chance of scoring higher than you normally would. And I got all these not spending more than $100. For all I got, I would say it was a pretty good deal. Don’t expect to see a life tutor, but the videos are quite easy to understand that you won’t miss life tutoring. But honestly, there were a few times I wished I had a life tutor to throw some questions at. However, I still got by. For the most part, I didn’t encounter any difficulty while learning. Navigating through the site was a breeze and everything was placed to help you find what you are looking for easily. I had enough test to go through. I’m happy to have enrolled for Magoosh GRE because it prepared me for the real deal.
I specifically got the Magoosh course because I needed help with the maths. I wouldn’t say their maths is that bad, but it definitely needs some updating. I was surprised to find that what I prepared for with Magoosh course was actually harder than the GRE ETS test itself. The formulas in the course were very lengthy and nothing like a tip on how to get the job done in a quicker time knowing that time is of the essence. I expected more practice tests since I went for the premium subscription. Although I didn’t get all I wanted with their course, I still recommend them as the best course to prepare for Magoosh. I mean, 340 isn’t bad for someone like me.
It is simply an amazing book that everyone preparing for GRE exams should buy.
I first paid for a one-month subscription because I didn’t have much time before my GRE exam. I initially took their mock questions and scored 303. I made use of their recommended study plan and it was very helpful. I made sure to use the RCs and practiced adequately. I didn’t forget to log in my mistakes too. I think that if I had gotten this course much earlier and for a longer time, I sure would have scored better than I did. It’s not just the maths, but their vocabulary builder app came in quite handy. It doesn’t mean you should not bother knowing the meaning of a word contextually. And while at it, make sure to try the synonym trees. Please don’t make the same mistake I made by not calculating on paper when it came to Quant. I was under pressure because of time and would have made a lot of mistakes if I hadn’t decided to risk it and calculate on paper. Don’t underestimate any aspect of the Magoosh GRE as even the videos helped me a lot. And the flashcards? Those were like the icing on the cake. The course may not be very affordable but if you can afford it, please go for it. You will certainly be glad you did.
I think it is a little overpriced since I could have gotten free materials on the internet if I had the time and patience to search for them. With that said, I still think it’s a good course in general. I had enough time to study the course and watched the videos over and over again as if I was watching a movie. This put me in a good place to study and understand what I was doing. Everything is properly arranged for easy access. There was no way I would have prepared for my GRE if not for Magoosh GRE course. If you are still thinking about it, I say go for it. You can start with the 7-day free trial to see if it something you would like to take on.
Is the course difficult? It sure is, but then so is the actual GRE exams. Just prepare your mind that you will get the best out of this and you will be amazed at how far you will go. I developed the same mentality and was able to get through the challenging text completion. The reading comprehension is quite simplified. If you make use of the provided mock test, you will find enough subjects that mimic the real test. The verbal video explanations were done very well that anyone can easily comprehend. I never for once had issues logging in or accessing the website. I read some people complain about some of their videos, especially maths. But I think that if you patiently watch the videos over and over again, you will have all your fears allayed. I say this because I HATE maths, but you won’t believe how easy I found it after watching their videos on maths. Don’t skip the mock tests cos that is what actually helps you know how well you are doing. I would recommend you take it every week and, in a month,, you will love the effort you put in. In total, I really got a good score after using the Magoosh GRE course. You should try it.
What the course is lacking is proper structure. It definitely wouldn’t hurt if they considered organizing the course chronologically to create an order of some type. With that, it would be easy to build each skill and then take a quiz to ascertain how I was progressing. The quiz on its own was not even based on what I had learned so far but touches on just about any possible question. And some of these questions are not covered in what I learned with the course. For someone looking for what to retain, this does not work for me. It also failed in boosting my confidence since I couldn’t tell if I was progressing or not. Somehow, the practice tests gave me some sort of mental stamina because I kept seeing repeated questions. But it didn’t really translate to what I was looking for, which is knowing my competency level. Some people swear by their video explanations, especially for quantitative questions, but I feel different. I would suggest going for ETS website and getting some books rather than going through Magoosh GRE preparation.
I love, love Magoosh! Going through books, I often felt discouraged because of the text I had to go through. But not with Magoosh. I found the course very interactive, easy and a fun way to learn an otherwise difficult or challenging course. The best part for me was the verbal part because it carried everyone along regardless of your knowledge level. No assumption that a student should know the meaning of a word, instead, they always break it down to the simplest level for easy comprehension. You will find a lot of great tips as well as skills for the verbal and quant in a unique way that is quite useful. You also find supplementary sections that can help you in other aspects. The easy navigation of the website makes it possible for you to start learning the very first time you visit the page. Just go for it.
I didn’t want to spend that much on just a course that will prepare me for GRE exams. But when I discovered that other courses cost more, I quickly signed up. The course itself is more difficult than the GRE exams tests. It sort of over-prepared me. But that’s a good thing since I needed that being an immigrant to the US. Their blog pdfs were nothing but a goldmine. They came in quite handy during my last week before my exams. I worried about getting support should I need it, and was happy when I got quick response from their support desk when I reached out to them. Magoosh GRE course is worth every money you put into it. If you are willing to put in the work, you will get a satisfying result at the end of the day.
