Dalhousie University Scholarships

The Dalhousie University scholarships, although varying in amount and eligibility requirements, expected benefits that come with these scholarships are as follows:

Dalhousie University rolls out millions of dollars in scholarships annually to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate course students who apply to study at the institution. They are given to students based on academic merits. These initiatives help students with their academic and personal financial needs. They also aim to reward students who actively participate in programs in the university and community. 

The following are the major scholarship initiatives offered at Dalhousie University for the academic year 2024-2025:

#1.Dalhousie Entrance Awards

Upon application to the university, students may already be considered for specific scholarships. This is possible when the applicant completes the General Entrance Award application. These schemes are initiated during the application period, so no specific scholarship titles are given out on the website. 

These scholarships are based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, leadership, achievements, community involvement, cultural identity, and financial need. The time spans differ for each initiative; some are only good for a year, while others may be renewed for 2 to 4 years. The lowest amount that these entrance scholarships can offer is $500, and the largest scheme is valued at around $48,000. 

There are over 2,000 entrance awards available through the General Entrance Award application. Students can be considered for multiple scholarships but are only awarded one.

#2.Graduate Scholarship programs in Nova Scotia

The Master’s degree award provides $10,000 over two years, while the Doctoral degree award offers $15,000 annually over four years, both requiring annual renewal.

#3.Predoctoral Killam Scholarships

-Each semester, Masters Tier One students are allocated $6666, with the addition of ITF (for international students) and relocation remuneration, should it be necessary.

-Doctoral Tier two students are allocated $10000 per term, a relocation stipend (if relevant), and a two-year President’s Award. 

#4.Achieving Excellence with the Women’s Scholarship for Eliza Ritchie Doctoral Entrance

Women’s Scholarship for Eliza Ritchie Doctoral Entrance has an annual value of $30,000 or $10,000 per term. If a recipient is already awarded other scholarships, the Award will add to the total amount of scholarship awarded, with a maximum of $30,000 per year.

#5.Achieving Excellence Through the James Robinson Johnston Graduate Entrance Scholarship for African Canadians

-The scholarship for Masters’s degree holders offers $15,000 for one twelve months of full-time work studying and can be renewed for up to two more years if academic requirements are met.

-You can get $19,000 for one school year if you get a Doctoral Scholarship. You can have it for up to three years if you keep doing well in school.

-The Award does not cover the cost of the fees and they must be taken care of separately.

If you have another scholarship, Dalhousie University offers an additional scholarship of up to $20,000 per year for a Master’s degree or up to $30,000 for a Doctoral degree.

#6.Vitamin Scholarships

This Award gives two scholarships each year. One scholarship is $19,000 for a Master’s degree, and the other is $21,000 for a Doctoral degree.

#7.The Abdul Majid Bader Graduate Scholarships

-The total value of this scholarship is $40,000 and is suitable for one year of full-time academic studies. Renewal is possible, provided the student passes the yearly review.

-Full-time study is permitted for up to 24 months.

-You have to pay fees using the money you get from the Award.

-Every year, one Award is given out.

#8.Richard and Melda Murray Jamaican Engineering Scholarships

This initiative is specifically offered to students from Jamaica applying for the university’s engineering program. It is one of the biggest scholarship schemes at the university, valued at a total of $88,000. The Scholarship is renewable for four years, with a grant of $22,000 to be given out annually. 

The scheme is for Jamaican students applying for the Bachelor of Engineering program who have good academic standing and need financial aid.

#9.Aramark Leadership Award

This Scholarship is a leadership award. It is given to students whom the initiative recognizes as exhibiting leadership and active community involvement. This is offered to undergraduate students who are enrolled in the following programs:

  • Architecture and Planning
  • Engineering
  • Health Professions
  • Arts and Social Sciences 
  • Computer Sciences
  • Management
  • Science
  • Dental Hygiene

The scheme is valued at $4,000 and is non-renewable, meaning it is a one-time scholarship. It is awarded to incoming or current 2nd-year, 3rd-year, 4th-year, and 5th-year students. It cannot be granted to incoming first-year students because its eligibility is based on merit and leadership excellence.

Students must be enrolled in any of the listed programs, and special preferences are given to students who are also involved in extracurricular activities.

Other Scholarships in Dalhousie University 

Dalhousie University offers a lot of scholarships, some of which are even provided specifically to certain students, both domestic and international. The university itself offers scholarships, and some are donor-funded.

For students with disabilities:

  • Dalhousie Student Union Accessibility Bursary – up to $4,000 ($1,000 annually, renewable for four years)
  • Edward A. Perkins – up to $4,000 ($1,000 annually, renewable for four years)
  • Johnsons Foundation Bursaries – up to $20,000 ($5,000 annually, renewable for four years)
  • Suddy and Barbara Bill Ashfield Bursary – $4,000 

For international students:

  • CorpFinance International Limited (Kevin Andrews) Indian Scholarship – $15,000

Dalhousie University Admission Requirements

The applications for Dalhousie University are to be submitted online. Applicants must choose a program, fill in relevant information, and provide supporting documents before submitting the application form.

Who Can Apply for This Scholarship?

The Dalhousie University Scholarship is available to international students pursuing Masters’s or Ph.D. studies. This includes current international students at Dalhousie and students who have applied for admission to their desired program.

To apply, you need to meet the following requirements. 

– Must be enrolled or applying for a Master’s or Ph.D. degree program at Dalhousie University. 

– You must be an international student and demonstrate a financial need.

– Must demonstrate academic excellence and leadership potential. 

– Must not hold any other scholarship, bursary, or Award.

-English language proficiency is a must

-If you are applying to the Master’s program, look at the CGS-M Assessing Standards to find out how to make your application the best. When you make your research proposal, use the Outline of the Proposed research (attachment) from the CGS-M instructions so you know what needs to be included in the document. When you write, make sure to use words that you know and that are easy to understand. 

-To apply for a Doctoral program, look at the rules for the Harmonized CGS-Doctoral programs. Consider looking at the instructions for the Vanier doctoral competition or the Tri-Agency Doctoral competition to help you make a good proposal.

How Can I Apply?

To apply for Dalhousie University Scholarships, follow the steps below:

1. Go to the FGS Scholarship Management Platform. If you have a Dalhousie NetID, click “Use Dalhousie NetID”. If not, give an email address and make a password. You only need one account to apply for many scholarships.

2. To apply for a scholarship, navigate to the home page and select either a fresh or an existing scholarship application Beginning from “My Applications”. Only one entry per competition is permitted for each individual. It is not allowable to submit multiple Unified Grant Requests.

3. If you are applying for a Master’s degree and want to be considered for other awards, you must select “Masters Degree – CGS-M Participation Option” as your submission category. Then you have to fill out a Subscription form before December 1st. If you don’t do this, you have to fill out A complete Harmonized Scholarship Application.

4. Fill out the questionnaire on the Scholarship Platform on the Web to be put in line for awards. The information you give is private and won’t be seen by anyone else.

5. To complete the application, select “Next” at the end of each page and “Save” if you wish to pause and resume later.

6. Applicants must submit their official transcripts on the scholarship website, per the application requirements. All transcripts should be compiled into one PDF file, and Dalhousie students can submit their unofficial grade records in lieu of the transcripts.

7. You need to get your referees to send their letters by January 16th, 2023 (February 15th for those not writing a thesis). Tell them the deadline a few days before. After that date, you can’t submit the letters, and your application won’t be accepted. When they are done, you will get an email, and a red checkmark next to their name. Check if they are done before the deadline.

8. To finish the form, agree to the rules and press the “Save & Complete” button.

Dalhousie University Application Fee

Dalhousie University does require a $150 fee upon application; this is a non-refundable charge for graduate study applicants. Even if the application is rejected, the fee will not be refunded. For undergraduate programs, the university charges $70. This fee is also non-refundable.

Most Canadian universities require the payment of an application fee; they usually range from $100 to $130.

There are no actual statistics on the admission rate of Dalhousie University, but various sources show that the acceptance rate is somewhere between 60 to 70%. The university is placed 12th countrywide and 291st worldwide according to the QS World University Rankings in 2022.

English Language Proficiency 

Student applicants are required to meet specified criteria for language proficiency as the general medium of instruction at Dalhousie University is English. 

Students who have English as their first language and students who have studied English for three years at the secondary level or one year at the post-secondary level are not required to prove their English fluency.
