Scholarship Benefits

In 2025, recipients of the RSS and RRSS receive the following benefits:

• A stipend of $35,886 per year for full-time study, adjusted annually for inflation.
• International recipients also receive an RTP International Tuition Fee Offset Scholarship (RIFOS) or an RMIT Research International Tuition Fee Scholarship (RRITFS).
• Local recipients, including Australian and New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, receive an RTP Fee Offset scholarship, which covers tuition fees for the duration of the program.
• A relocation allowance for moving expenses to start the postgraduate research program, with up to $515 per adult and $255 per child, up to a maximum of $1,540.
• Paid sick leave, maternity leave, and parental leave within the Scholarship Terms and Conditions.
• The standard duration for a research doctoral scholarship is three and a half years full-time.
• A research master’s scholarship lasts two years full-time, with no extensions.

The duration of an RSS or RRSS will be reduced by any previous study at the same level before starting the RMIT research program.

Eligibility

Scholarships are awarded based on a competitive selection process. Applicants are ranked according to their academic achievement, research outputs, and relevant professional experience.

Priority is given to applicants who:

• Achieved high distinction (80% or above) in the final two years of the qualifying program(s)
• Are considered by RMIT to have an equivalent level of academic attainment, taking into account their prior studies, work experience, research publications, and other research experience
• Can receive the scholarship for a minimum of 12 months on a full-time basis (or part-time equivalent) due to prior enrollment in a graduate research program
• Have not already completed a graduate research program at the same or higher course level (e.g., Masters by Research applicants should not have a Masters by Research or PhD)
• Have not previously held an RMIT or Commonwealth-funded postgraduate research scholarship, unless it was terminated within six months of the scholarship’s payments starting
• Are or will be enrolled and primarily based at an RMIT Australian campus.

English Proficiency Requirement:

• International applicants must meet the English language requirements by the application closing date to be considered for a scholarship.

Part-Time Applications:

• Local applicants may be approved for part-time applications if they can show exceptional circumstances, as specified in the Research Scholarship Terms and Conditions. Part-time scholarships are not tax-exempt.

Remaining Candidature:

• Candidates currently enrolled and applying for a scholarship, or transferring to RMIT from another institution, must have at least 24 months (or part-time equivalent) remaining for a PhD, or 12 months remaining for a Masters by research, from the start of the scholarship.
