The University of Ottawa takes pride in its globally varied student population. Consequently, starting in the fall of 2024 term, students from the nations listed below will enjoy substantial decreases in their tuition costs when enrolled in an eligible undergraduate program conducted in English.
Scholarship Eligibility and Requirements
Undergraduate students from Africa, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, South Korea, India or Bangladesh studying in English.
- All suitable students are evaluated for this award and will be informed during their admission.
- Although no application is needed for this award, awardees must provide verification of citizenship of a country or region in Africa before they receive their first payments.
The applicant should:
- Be an international student with a legitimate study permit.
- Possess citizenship from an African country, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Vietnam or India, .
- Be enrolled full-time.
- For the Entrance scholarship: Have an admission average of 89.99% or lower once calibrated on our grading scale.
- For the Outstanding scholarship: Have a minimum admission average of 90% once calibrated on our grading scale.
Types of Financial Aid
The University of Ottawa offers different kinds of financial assistance to international students:
- Admission scholarships and bursaries: CAD 6,500 to CAD 7,500
- Faculty scholarships: CAD 1,000 to CAD 10,000
- Merit Scholarship: CAD 1,000 per term
- Mobility Scholarship: CAD 1,000 or CAD 2,000
- Private Donor Scholarships: CAD 1,000 or more
- Personal Contribution: Part-time job or other programs offering variable amounts
- Co-operative Education Programs – Paid placement (per 4-month work term): CAD 10,000

Scholarships for Undergraduate Programs
The University provides around 42 Million CAD annually in scholarships and bursaries to undergraduate students. The primary source of funding to international students is the Automatic Excellence Scholarships.
Students with excellent high school grades can receive an Admission Scholarship for their first year. The amount is determined by their admission average:
- 95% to 100%: CAD 4,000
- 90% to 94.9%: CAD 3,000
- 85% to 89.9%: CAD 2,000
- 80% to 84.9%: CAD 1,000
Further, recipients receive a Merit Scholarship of CAD 1,000 per term if they maintain a minimum term grade point average (TGPA) of 8.5 or approximately 82.5%.
The University also offers approximately 15 prestigious Admission Scholarships providing financial aid to over 100 international students. Some include the President’s Scholarship for International Students, the Chancellor’s Scholarship for International Students, and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts’ Merit Scholarship. These scholarships have varying benefits, eligibility criteria, and application deadlines.

- Eligible students for this scholarship receive it automatically when they register and it goes towards reducing their tuition fees directly.
Conditions for Outstanding Scholarships
- Outstanding Scholarships are granted through a competitive process to the best applicants who have a 90% or above admission average.
- The application cutoff is April 1, 2024, and the admission must be concluded by April 15, 2024.
- Favoritism will be given to applicants who choose the University of Ottawa as their primary choice.
- Scholarship awardees must start their program in September.
- To encourage diversity, each faculty aims to dispense an equal number of scholarships.
How to apply
- Citizenship from any African country or one specified on the list
- Admission in the fall 2024 term to an eligible undergraduate program conducted in English within the designated faculties
- Exclusion from the French immersion stream
- Possession of a valid study permit at the commencement of classes
- Full-time enrollment
While many scholarships are granted based on admission, some require a separate application. The process for application-based scholarships is as follows:
- After applying for admission to the University of Ottawa, students receive an email with their uoAccess ID and password, which allows them to access the university’s student portal, uoZone.
- Students log into uoZone to access the Online Scholarships and Bursaries search engine, found under ‘Finances and Jobs’.
- Students must create their profile and search for suitable scholarships and bursaries, applications for which open on December 1.
- Finally, click on ‘APPLY’ to submit the application.
Steps to apply
Students from Africa, Vietnam, Bangladesh, India, or Indonesia will automatically qualify for a renewable Entrance or Excellence scholarship based on their average when they enroll in a qualifying undergraduate program delivered in English. Those from China or South Korea will be evaluated for Excellence scholarships within the corresponding programs.

Before Accepting an Offer:
Applicants must carefully review the Scholarship Benefits and Conditions document. This outlines all terms, requirements, and policies scholars must agree to.
For the International English Entrance Scholarship, the student must:
- Maintain enrollment as a full-time student in the admitted undergraduate program.
- Sustain a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 5.0 or above by the conclusion of each academic year.
For the International English Excellence Scholarship, the student must:
- Maintain a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 8.0 or above by the conclusion of each academic year.
- If the student holds a CGPA between 5.0 and 7.99, the scholarship will be extended, with the renewal amount matching that of the International English Entrance Scholarship.
The scholarship is open to renewal up to 12 installments as long as the above criteria are met by the student.
