Scholarship Benefits

Scholars will get funds to cover the total cost of attendance that other financial aid and the Student Aid Index do not already cover. This is determined by the FAFSA or the method used by the Scholar’s college or university.

Cost of attendance covers fees, tuition, room, books, board, and transportation, and may include other individual expenses.

Eligibility

To apply, you must:

  • Be a high school senior
  • Belong to at least one of the following ethnicities: African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian & Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American
  • Be eligible for the Pell Grant
  • Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
  • Have a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent), and be in good academic standing
  • Additionally, you must plan to enroll full-time in a four-year degree program at a U.S. accredited, not-for-profit, private or public college or university.

 If you are an American Indian/Alaska Native applicant, you will need to provide proof of tribal enrollment.

Ideal Applicant Profile

The ideal candidate will have:

  • An excellent academic record in high school, ranking in the top 10% of their graduating class
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, such as through community service, extracurricular activities, or other experiences
  • Exceptional personal skills, including emotional maturity, motivation, and perseverance

The Gates Scholarship is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship. It is intended for exceptional minority high school seniors that come from low-income families. Every year, the scholarship is given to exceptional student leaders, with the goal of helping them achieve their full potential.
