Who Can Apply?

  • Eligible programmes cover all Master’s at Leiden University, with these exceptions:
    • Non-advanced LLM and MSc programmes at Leiden Law School.
    • Programmes commencing in February from the Faculties of Humanities, Sciences, and the Leiden Law School.
  • Applicants should hold a non-EEA/non-EFTA passport and should not qualify for Dutch student financial assistance.
  • However, nationality restrictions do not apply to:
    • All LLM Advanced Studies programmes
    • MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy

Note: Post-Brexit UK students are now eligible, unless they were residing in The Netherlands prior to January 1, 2021.

Scholastic Requirements

  • Applicants need to exhibit superior scholastic achievements in their previous studies, relevant to their chosen Master’s programme.
  • Roughly put, the applicant should be in the top 10% of their class in their preceding study programme.

Restrictions and Obligations

  • Students who have previously secured a Leiden University Master’s degree are typically ineligible, unless specific exceptions apply.
  • Ineligibility also extends to students enrolled in an LLM (non-advanced) or MSc programme at Leiden Law School, or in a February-starting programme at particular faculties.
  • The LExS cannot be combined with a full scholarship from another source. Exceptions may be made for partial scholarships though.

How to Apply

  • Submit a Master’s programme application online to Leiden University and remit the application fee.
  • Express your desire to be considered for the LExS and attach a motivation letter to your application.
  • Ensure you submit the scholarship application prior to the LExS deadline.
