Scholarship Benefits

Master’s Degree Funding:

  • Students from outside the EU: Monthly stipend of €934, along with potential individual allowances and possibly health insurance coverage; tuition fee waivers may be available in Germany under certain conditions.
  • EU-based students: Stipend amounts vary, with a maximum of €812 plus €300 for books monthly; tuition fee waivers are not available in Germany, but may be offered with restrictions in other nations. The scholarship typically covers the standard duration of the study program and can be prolonged by one semester.

Doctoral Degree Funding:

  • Non-EU doctoral candidates: A monthly stipend of €1,200, a mobility allowance of €100 monthly, in addition to various individual allowances; tuition costs are not covered.
  • Doctoral students from within the EU: A base monthly scholarship of €1,350, plus an additional €100 per month for research expenses; while tuition fees are not covered in Germany, limited coverage may be available in other countries. Scholarships are generally granted for a three-year period (with an initial two-year grant possibly extendable by up to 12 months).

Eligibility

Masters Programme Applicants with Qualifications from Abroad:

  • Applications are accepted either before the start of the Masters programme or until the first semester concludes.
  • Verification of your initial professional qualification is necessary.
  • German language proficiency must be demonstrated: B2 level or DSH 2 certification required.
  • Doctoral Programme Applicants with Foreign Qualifications:
  • Inclusion of proof for admission into doctoral studies at a recognized state or state-accredited university, typically within Germany, is mandatory in your application.
  • Preliminary research should be completed by the application deadline and a feasible project timeline for completion is to be provided.
  • Doctoral topics that align with the key areas of interest for the Foundation may receive preferential consideration.
  • German language proficiency needs to be evidenced by a B2 level or DSH 2 certification.

Note that the online application gateway will be inaccessible after March 1 or September 1 (applicable solely to PhD studies).

Additional Information

The Heinrich Böll Foundation’s scholarship division offers awards to both graduate-level students and doctoral candidates from outside Germany. However, the foundation does not accept scholarship applications for undergraduate degrees. International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the German language, with a requirement of good to very good language skills (minimum of B2 Level or DSH2).
