Scholarship Benefits

The BAEF intends to distribute as many as eleven fellowships in the form of non-renewable grants. These fellowships come with a stipend amounting to:

  • $29,000 for students pursuing a Master’s degree or a Ph.D.
  • $33,000 for individuals in Post-doctoral positions.
  • Furthermore, the Foundation will cover the expense of health insurance in Belgium along with the stipend. Recipients should not anticipate any further financial assistance.

Eligibility

Candidates for the fellowship must be either citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

Eligibility requirements for applicants include:

  • Being enrolled in a Ph.D. or an equivalent degree program within the United States at the time of the application,
  • Enrolling in a graduate program (at the Master’s or Ph.D. level) in Belgium while in possession of the BAEF fellowship,
  • Possessing a Master’s, Ph.D., or an equivalent degree. Additionally, post-doctoral applicants are expected to have completed their Ph.D. no more than two years prior to July 1, 2024.

Fluency in Dutch, French, or German is not a prerequisite for application.

How to apply

It is incumbent upon applicants to secure their own enrollment or affiliation with a university or research institution in Belgium.

  • The application form is accessible for download here (specifically for US applicants).
  • To accompany the filled-out application form, candidates are required to provide transcripts from both undergraduate and graduate studies, a concise autobiographical statement, a detailed statement of purpose, and three letters of recommendation.

Additional Information

Fellows are expected to reside in Belgium throughout the duration of their fellowship, committing to a stay of 12 months. Should a Fellow opt to stay in Belgium for a period shorter than 12 months, the stipend will be adjusted on a prorated basis. The fellowship’s minimum term is set at 6 months.
