Suez, 1956

After Israel invaded the Sinai Peninsula on October 29, 1956, President Eisenhower held an urgent meeting with his national security advisors. A few months earlier, Egypt had nationalized the Suez Canal. These meeting notes record the discussion of how to do the right thing while dealing with congressional consequences, the United Nations, and our country’s relationship with Britain and France.
