Vietnam, 1975

This telegram—the last message from the U.S. Embassy in Saigon, South Vietnam—was sent on April 29, 1975. President Gerald R. Ford had ordered the evacuation of Americans before 40,000 North Vietnamese troops entered the city. Within 18 hours, 8,000 people were evacuated—1,000 American civilians and almost 7,000 South Vietnamese refugees.
