A bandage and a smile . . .


This photograph of a smiling American soldier with a bandaged arm was taken September 26, 1918, in the Argonne region of northeastern France. During World War I, the Americans and their French allies fought the Germans in the Meuse-Argonne area from September 26, 1918, until the Armistice of November 11, 1918. More than 95,000 Americans were wounded during this offensive.
