Indignant citizens protest

2/1861

Citizens of Minnesota sent this fiery petition to Congress during the winter of 1861, demanding that the United States recapture the forts, arms, and other Federal property seized by Southern states. The Minnesotans called the secessionists “rebels and traitors” and urged that the United States reject the “extension of human slavery.” Any compromise would amount to “buying off the perpetrators.”
