Birdman in segregation

This 1940 architectural plan for improvements to the U.S. Penitentiary at Alcatraz shows details of the first floor and second and third tiers of Cell Block D. Situated on an island in San Francisco Bay, the prison held the nation’s toughest criminals, including Al Capone and “Machine Gun” Kelly. Robert Stroud, the “Birdman of Alcatraz”, spent six years in segregation in this cell block.
