For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity


This April 8, 1955, citation accompanied the Medal of Honor presented posthumously to Lieutenant, Junior Grade, John K. Koelsch. Koelsch died in enemy captivity during the Korean War after leading a daring mission to rescue a downed pilot. The Medal of Honor is the nation’s highest award for individual valor in combat.
