The surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia

On April 9, 1865, Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate General Robert E. Lee met in Wilmer McClean’s home at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, to settle the terms of surrender for Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. The next day, commissioners appointed by each general met to determine how the surrender would be put into effect. The details of that meeting are listed in this document. The formal surrender ceremony took place two days later.
