First lady and presidential mother
Born in 1925, Barbara Pierce, seen here in the early 1930s, grew up in Rye, New York. At the age of 16, she met future president George H.W. Bush and married him four years later. George W. Bush, first of their six children, became the 43rd President of the United States, making Barbara Bush only the second woman (after Abigail Adams) to be both a First Lady and the mother of a president.
