This map details Union and Confederate army positions around the Virginia city of Fredericksburg in December 1862. Sitting on the south bank of the Rappahannock River, Union General Ambrose Burnside’s troops attacked Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s army between December 11 and 15, 1862. The Battle of Fredericksburg was a bloody engagement that resulted in heavy Union losses and a decisive victory for the Confederacy.
