The battle for Guadalcanal

The Allies began their first major Pacific offensive of World War II with an attack on Guadalcanal, one of the Solomon Islands, in August 1942. The Allies immediately captured an intact airfield and strengthened their position through air attacks. These photographs of LVT-1 amphibious tractors heading for Guadalcanal were taken at the start of the battle. The fighting continued for six months.
