Preparing to build a bridge

9/8/1944

In this 1944 photograph, members of the U.S. Army prepare to construct a bailey bridge, one made of parts that could be assembled quickly. The new bridge across the Marne River at Chalons, France, would replace the one that had been destroyed. Note the soldiers on the bridge and the equipment on the far bank.
